Job Description
VP of Product Development and Engineering - Foodservice Equipment
About Us:
We are a rapidly growing fun and profitable privately held company based
in the East Bay. We develop and market automated frozen beverage
blenders (think milkshakes) for commercial/foodservice use, generally in
self-serve applications such as convenience stores. We also market
associated frozen food products for use with our blenders. We have a
"razor handle, razor blade" business model and the frozen food products
(think milkshakes again) are our razor blades. We currently manufacture
about 1,500 blenders per year, which we sell for in excess of $5K each.
We have patented technology developed by our founder and President which
serves as the basis of our exciting growth.
Job Description:
We are bringing our Engineering and Product Development functions
in-house after using outside consulting firms to date. This position
will lead the development of our in-house engineering and product
development capability.
Responsibilities will include leading existing product refinement to
improve quality and cost, as well as leading new product development.
We are about to begin development of our next generation blender, which
will present an opportunity to thoroughly reconsider most aspects of our
current designs with a sharp eye for improving the consumer use
experience as well as the blender's reliability and cost. We currently
use a domestic contract manufacturer and will be evaluating offshore
sourcing as well for our next generation blender.
This position will be a hands-on development position. You will lead a
team including our company President, internal engineers, outside
engineering consultants, our contract manufacturer and our component
suppliers. This position offers the exciting and challenging
opportunity to provide the creative leadership for this dynamic team.
Terrific project leadership and management skills will be essential to
your success. A desire to dig into and live the details of the design
work will be equally important. This is a small team taking on a big
challenge. There is no bureaucracy to get in your way (or hide behind).
You will lead the product development and refinement process.
A strong working knowledge of SolidWorks will be very helpful as all of
our design work is done in SolidWorks, and you will be knee deep in it.
The blender design will address several dynamic mechanical engineering
challenges using powerful variable speed motors, and it will incorporate
sophisticated electronic controls developed in partnership with one of
our key suppliers. In addition, the blended beverages we market are a
consumer product, and an ability to thoroughly understand and optimize
consumer interactions with the blender and product are keys to our
success. Lastly, a desire to understand the subtleties of working with
food products to make them great tasting and safe will be very important
in this position.
If you are looking for an opportunity to lead in a demanding, fast
paced, fun environment, and you can get excited about a great milkshake,
this could be a perfect opportunity for you. We are seeking a great
team leader and player with eight or more years of proven engineering
leadership experience, who is comfortable in a smaller, rapidly growing
business environment. The successful candidate will have an outstanding
ability to see the big picture while working the details. A bachelor's
degree from a well known engineering school is very much a plus, though
if you can demonstrate in other ways that you have awesome talent, that
is even better. A good sense for industrial design is also a plus.
Experience in the foodservice industry will be helpful but not a
necessity if you are a quick, self-directed learner. Excellent salary,
bonus and benefits are all included.
Please respond to Jim Farrell - at jfarrell@freal.com with your resume
and a clear, well written cover letter describing why you think you are
well suited for this position. Thank you!
